Can Flowers Help Your Mental and Physical Wellbeing Bloom?

Flowers aren’t just nice to look at, or thoughtful gifts for birthdays or Valentine’s Day treat. Research suggests they can also have a positive impact on mental and physical wellbeing.

Several studies have shown measurable positive changes when people interact with plants.[1]

They can boost happiness, reduce stress, and even support mental and physical wellbeing.[2]

From fragrant roses and lavender to low-maintenance cacti, plants can help us feel better both mentally and physically.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Flowers and plants may help lower cortisol levels, one of the body’s primary stress hormones, by triggering a neurochemical response that naturally calms our stress systems.[3]

According to research highlighted by Science Insights, part of this effect may come from phytoncides, natural compounds released by trees and plants into the air.

Studies suggest these compounds may contribute to reduced stress and improved feelings of calm.[4]

Some flowers are particularly associated with relaxation, including lavender, roses, chamomile, and jasmine. These varieties can be ideal additions to bedrooms or office spaces to help create a calmer environment.[5]

Therapy for Depression

As well as reducing stress, flowers and gardening activities are also proven to help lift our mood.

Horticultural therapy programs, where patients actively participate in planting, pruning, and garden-based activities, have shown benefits for people with depression.[6]

Actually touching soil, arranging plants, and tending a garden gave the best results and also led to improved sleep quality, stronger social connections, reduced negative emotions, and foster a greater sense of meaning and connection with nature.[7]

A separate study American Rutgers University found that flowers sparked genuine feelings of joy.[8]

Participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious, and agitated after receiving flowers, with these positive emotions lasting for several days.

The study also found that people spent more time with family and friends when flowers were present, helping to strengthen social relationships and emotional health.

Physical Healing

Flowers and plants have played a role in healthcare for centuries, and modern research suggests they still have value in medical settings today.

A notable study from Kansas State University found that patients who had flowers or plants in their hospital rooms required less pain medication and experienced lower blood pressure and heart rates than those in rooms without plants.[9]

A randomised trial involving 90 surgical patients found that rooms with plants and flowers helped patients heal more quickly. They even left the hospital earlier than those without plants.[10]

More Than Just a Pretty Addition

Flowers offer much more than pleasant scents and attractive colours. Research suggests they can contribute to reduced stress, improved mood, stronger social connections, and even enhanced physical recovery.

Whether displayed in your home, workplace, or garden, flowers can be a simple yet effective way to support both mental and physical wellbeing. That’s even more reason to brighten your surroundings with nature.
