Checking the World Cup scores? It’s also a great time to keep score of our health.
With the tournament underway, many of us are tracking results, late-night fixtures, and fantasy football stats.
But regular check-ins shouldn’t be reserved for the action on the pitch. Simple, routine self-checks can help you monitor your health, spot early warning signs, and support a healthier lifestyle.[1]
Below are easy ways to stay on top of your wellbeing. These checks don’t replace seeing a doctor, but they can help you notice changes sooner.
- Cancer checks[2]
Monthly self-checks are recommended.
- Breast: Look for lumps or swelling in the breast, chest or armpit; skin changes such as dimpling or redness; changes in size or shape; nipple discharge or inversion.
- Testicular: Check monthly, ideally after a warm shower. Watch for lumps, swelling, heaviness, or changes in size, texture, or appearance.
- Resting Heart Rate[3]
Check your pulse weekly (or if you feel unwell) by placing fingers on your wrist for 30 seconds. It’s a simple way to gauge overall health. A persistently elevated rate may signal stress, infection, anaemia, thyroid issues, or heart rhythm problems.
- Dental Check[4]
Regularly examine your teeth and gums for early signs of gum disease, decay, or infection. Look for bleeding, swelling, sensitivity, bad breath, or jaw pain.
- Eye Check[5]
After a shower, check the whites of your eyes. Redness can indicate irritation or infection, while yellowing may signal jaundice and needs medical attention.
- Grip strength check[6]
Check every 2–3 months. A weak grip can be linked to frailty or cardiovascular risk. Try squeezing bathroom scales for a rough measure. Strength can be improved with exercises like squeezing a tennis ball or doing upper-body workouts.
