Mental Health Across Generations: Why the Right Support Matters at Any Age

Mental Health Across Generations: Why the Right Support Matters at Any Age

Age may be “just a number”, but when it comes to mental health, every stage of life brings its own challenges.

Whether you’re a teenager facing online pressures or a retiree dealing with loneliness, mental health challenges can affect anyone.

Understanding these differences is key to ensuring that the right support is available when it’s needed most.

Older Generations

It’s common knowledge that the UK has an ageing population, but did you know the world does to?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that by 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 years or over and the number of people aged 80 years or older is expected to more than triple between 2023 and 2060.1

As people live longer, older adults continue to play an important role in society—whether that’s supporting families, volunteering, or staying active in their communities.

However, later life can also bring significant changes. Experiences such as retirement, bereavement, or reduced social interaction can increase the risk of loneliness and isolation.2

Despite this, mental health issues in older people are often under-recognised or dismissed as a natural part of ageing.3

In reality, low mood and depression are not inevitable, and with the right support, many people can maintain a strong sense of wellbeing well into later life.

Access to timely care is crucial. Early recognition and appropriate support can make a meaningful difference, helping individuals stay connected, independent, and mentally well.

Younger Generations

For younger people, a different set of pressures is shaping mental health.

Growing up in a fast-paced, digitally connected world presents unique challenges—from the constant influence of social media to academic and social expectations.4

As a result, conditions such as anxiety and depression are increasingly common among children and young adults, and mental health difficulties remain a leading cause of poor life outcomes in this group.5

At the same time, demand for support has risen significantly.

More than 90,000 under‑18s in England are currently waiting over two years following referral for their first meaningful contact with NHS specialist community mental health services.6

This has led to a growing interest in alternative routes to support, including options that can provide quicker access to professional advice and care when needed.

Indeed, recent figures show that half of young people aged 18-34 find private health cover appealing and would consider going private if NHS waiting times were long.7

A Changing Approach to Healthcare

Across all age groups, it is increasingly important to look for ways to access timely, reliable healthcare that complements traditional services.

Rather than replacing existing systems, private healthcare options are often used alongside them, helping individuals access support sooner while still benefiting from the wider healthcare landscape.

By upgrading to the HMCA Plus Plan and you’ll benefit from:

  • 24/7 access to private GP consultations
  • Expert helplines for mental wellbeing, sleep, nutrition, and physical health
  • Confidential support whenever you need it

Mental health does not discriminate by age—and access to care shouldn’t either.

With thoughtful planning and the right resources, individuals and families can feel better equipped to navigate life’s challenges, whatever stage they’re at.
