Sneeze the Day: How to Beat Hay Fever This Summer

Sneezing, coughing and itchy eyes signal summer just as much as barbecues, the World Cup and music festivals for hay fever sufferers.

Although hay fever can last from as early as January to as late as November, symptoms are usually worse between late March and September, especially when it’s warm, humid and windy.

And with no cure, it means people with hay fever have to suffer through the summer preoccupied with tissues, tablets and nose sprays.

However, there are some other tips and tricks to avoid hay fever overshadowing sunny days.

For example, you can:

  • Put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask or a wide-brimmed hat to stop pollen getting into your nose and eyes
  • Shower and change your clothes after you have been outside to wash pollen off
  • Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible
  • Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
  • Try to use a pollen filter in the air vents of your car

Unfortunately, smoke makes symptoms worse so it may mean less barbecues for hay fever sufferers and it is also recommended not to dry your clothes outside as they can catch pollen.

Hopefully, by being clever around avoiding pollen and managing symptoms sufferers will still be able to enjoy fun activities over the summer months.
