With more than 60% of men waiting over a week before seeing a doctor after noticing symptoms1, HMCA is encouraging men to be more open about their health.
Refusing to seek medical help sooner can lead to delayed diagnoses and poorer outcomes for men[2].
Yet over 40% of men only seek medical help when they believe a condition is serious. So, why do men feel the need to stay silent?[3]
For generations societal norms and pressure have conditioned men to appear strong, resilient, and self-reliant meaning they are less likely to admit illness or ask for help, even for serious concerns.[4]
This culture of silence has serious consequences.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 35, and, alarmingly, four in five suicides in England are in men.[5]
This highlights the urgent need for better mental health support and stigma reduction.
Men must be encouraged to speak openly, seek help, and reject the notion that vulnerability equals weakness.[6]
As Tom Smith, director of a leading healthcare initiative focused on male populations, notes: “Breaking through the men’s health stigma requires us to redefine societal norms around what it means to be strong.”[7]
There has been progress when it comes to mental health to break the stigma.
Grassroots organisations such as CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and Andy’s Man Club provide safe spaces for men to talk openly, challenge stigma, and build supportive networks.[8]
However, practical barriers also play a role. Busy work schedules and limited flexibility in healthcare access can prevent men from getting the support they need.[9]
